Rising alternative R&B artist KELS released her new single “6ft Under” on March 19, addressing the impact of generational trauma. A deeply personal single, KELS uses her soulful vocals and a haunting piano melody to confront and honor the family legacy that’s made her who she is today.
Starting off with an ominous stomp-clap beat under her vocals and that haunting piano, “6ft Under” immediately sets a darker tone. Inspired by her great-grandmother’s runaway story, the song aims to pay homage to the lineage of women in KELS’s family, aiming to capture their resilience and strength while also acknowledging the pain, trauma, and chaos they lived through. The weight of these experiences ultimately trickles down the line, shaping her into the woman she is now.
With this in mind, the song is carried forward by the passion and emotional expression in her delivery of the lyrics as the instrumentals swell with subtle additions, always careful to let the vocals shine. In the second half, she’s joined by almost choral background vocals, emphasizing her power and that of the women who came before her. KELS shares more about the meaning behind the song:
“[It’s] about where I come from—the patterns, the pain, and the stories that shaped me… trying to hold onto these memories before they’re gone.”
With “6ft Under,” KELS succeeds in telling her story while also showcasing her incredible vocal range. Having had her breakout in 2025 with her single “Gone,” KELS continues to cement herself in the blues and R&B space and we can’t wait to hear what’s next.
