Oftentimes, the best love creeps up on you. It’s usually a sudden, magical experience that feels like a near tidal wave. Singer-songwriter Joshua Bassett finds himself falling in love when he least expects it on his latest single, “Blue” — his first release in more than a year.

A year since releasing his debut album, The Golden Years, Bassett returns to music (and even, social media) with a warm, dreamy guitar-driven ballad full of yearning and romantic overtones. It also marks his first single with Push Records after releasing the album and multiple singles with Warner Records.

“Blue” opens with Bassett praying, skipping rocks, thinking about “the way it was back then.” With that wistful, daydreaming tone, he admits the shock of it all: “And out of the blue / I fell for you.” Known to have gotten his heart broken in the past, the 24-year-old singer details the comfort that comes with being someone who feels special and safe, “Spillin’ out my secrets now / At a table for two,” and calling it “My joyride, my sugar rush.”

Bassett’s warmth and excitement are tender, inviting and full of the rush of a new love that is both intense and sweet. Despite that rush and butterflies that come with a new romance, the guitar-driven ballad, “Blue,” is also playful and he essentially releases all control, singing, “Kiss me like you mean it, dear / We’ll stay up till’ noon.”

While Bassett said The Golden Years explored “the hope and heartbreak of [his] transition into adulthood” and “the bitter-sweet nostalgia of [his] late teens and early twenties,” ultimately, “Blue” feels like a turning point. It follows Bassett’s journey into an adult relationship. Turning over a new leaf — after not expecting a love to show up so quickly in his life — Bassett can find some hope, ease and tenderness in finding love unexpectedly and being swept away by it.
