Jonah Kagen tries to fight temptation on “God Needs The Devil”

Date:

If you have recently been caught up in all things Jonah Kagen, you are not alone. In December, Jonah released The Roads, an introspective and wistful project that highlighted Jonah’s skills as a singer-songwriter. Two of the EP’s tracks, “The Roads” and “Save My Soul,” have picked up radio play across the country, sparking a light in fans from the likes of Los Angeles, Nashville, Indianapolis, and Tampa. Additionally, Jonah has been able to connect with these fans in the flesh, as he recently wrapped up his headlining ‘Save My Soul’ tour, which was sold out across the US. Later this year, he will be making his rounds during festival season, playing at Summerfest, Sommo Festival, and RedWest Festival. Before he does so, however, Jonah is treating fans to his first follow-up since The Roads with “God Needs The Devil.”

A raw and rhythmic folk anthem, “God Needs The Devil” finds Jonah between a rock and a hard place. Throughout the track, he tries to remain pure and good but is challenged by an evil temptation. Over steady downbeats and hand claps, he sings, “You can hide, but you can’t stay gone / She’ll find you, won’t take her long / She’ll come on back with every dawn / And drag your ass where you belong,” before claiming, “I need you like God needs the devil.” While he knows this tortured type of love always leaves him stranded, Jonah keeps falling into this type of situation. You can see if he makes it out alive in the link below.

Telling us more about “God Needs The Devil,” Jonah shares,

“‘God Needs The Devil’ is a metaphor for the human condition. It’s the persisting struggle to be good while having a dependence, or at least a false sense of dependence, on something evil. It means so much to me, and I hope you can find some piece of yourself in it.”

You can check out “God Needs The Devil” on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
