Jason Lyles knows all too well that the world is “On Fire”

Date:

In anticipation for his upcoming concept album, Suspensions of Disbelief, Jason Lyles has released his new single “On Fire,” a comment on the state of global warming on the world.

The unironic chorus “it’s on fire” sets up the space opera song with Lyles dissecting the chaos of climate change: “it’s better to dance in the ashes.” In the first verse, Lyles highlights the connections between climate change and capitalism as he states that the world is burning but “nothing gets in the way of profit.” Another nod to the authoritative ignorance towards climate change and resulting anxiety is the line “there is no need to be frantic when the problem is systematic.” Lyles doesn’t try to be poetic or flowery in his lyrics, rather opting to be as forward as possible. This works well for the protest song, as he opts for making a statement over beating around the bush.

The lyrics take up the first half of the song before a violin and guitar solo take over. For the first half of the song, a classic 90s rock band sound with an electric and acoustic guitar, bass, and drum set sit comfortably. After the second verse, however, a violin smoothly fades in to deliver a fast change of pace and striking solo. Hypothetically, a violin should sound out of place here, but the solo complements the rest of the instruments perfectly. Emphasizing this compatibility is the guitar solo that takes over after the violin with an incredible unfaltering transition. The electric guitar is last centerpiece of the song before a final chorus finishes it off.

Jason Lyles’ forthcoming album, Suspensions of Disbelief, is set to be an exploration of science fiction and the current state of the world, and “On Fire” gives insight into the themes that the artist will be exploring.

“On Fire” will be available to listen to wherever you find your music on the 9th of May.
