Gobe is more than a 25-year-old singer-songwriter and DJ. He’s a multifaceted artist that manages to blend indie rock, pop, and hip-hop into one song. His recent single, “see through my eyes,” is the title track of his recent EP released September 2nd. He shares that the EP was more of an encapsulation of how he processed the last year of his life and you can hear every chapter from track to track.
Lyrically, “see through my eyes” manages to be commercially catchy but still balances having an authentically raw tone. The song starts off with a laid-back, moody sound but immediately becomes more indie, opening the song with the lyrics, “when you say it’ll all be fine / I know you lie half of the time.”
Vocally, it’s a familiar sound to any indie rock or indie pop fans, but there’s a touch of angst that builds with every lyric becoming more emotionally charged until he breaks into a vocal style that’s something more like rap. He switches between the two styles over a layered melody, highlighting the drums with the hip-hop-centered parts of the song, and the guitar for the more vocally raw parts.
The soundscape, however, is interesting in how it fades the guitar and other sounds out to keep only the drum melody when he switches into the hip-hop style. This almost allows there to be a hyper-focus in the lyrics during those moments, really highlighting the emotionally raw nature of the song.
Overall, the song seamlessly blends two distinct genres into a cohesive track, which is what will immediately stand out to the listener. You can hear his internal struggle through each lyric, showcasing a vulnerable side to Gobe, but it’s all wrapped into an infectiously catchy melody that is just familiar enough to please fans of both indie and hip-hop music.
