Australia’s Geowulf has just released the single “Top Down” in conjunction with the announcement of upcoming EP, Twinkly Depression. The glittery song drifts between dream pop and shoegaze to deliver a quiet plea for help, channeling the likes of The Marías and Mazzy Star.
Upbeat and punchy drums and guitars start off the sparkly song as Geowulf asks “have you ever prayed that things would change?” The acoustic guitars blend well with the electric keys in the verse before an abundance of synths join at the chorus. The synth melody in the second verse only adds to the hypnotic quality of the song, enchanting listeners with its shimmering sound. The guitar riff from the intro returns just before the bridge and gives a harsh but nice contrast to all the keys in the mix. With the return of ’80s-inspired pop in recent years, the synth work in this song falls happily into the same category as the newer sounds of Chappell Roan and CMAT.
However, these dopamine-inducing sounds don’t distract listeners from the somber lyrics, which are filled with anxiety and fears for the future. In the chorus, Geowulf admits “top down, I’m all worn out,” revealing a world of tired heartbreak. Yet, there is still a sense of hope left in the song as the singer-songwriter asks for someone to “save me.” The lyrics feel journalistic, adding to the nostalgia created in the instrumentation.
“Top Down” is a “deeply sad song” according to Australia’s Geowulf, but that doesn’t stop the tune from catching the ears of anyone nearby. If you’re wanting to hear the song live, Geowulf is heading on tour later this month, with shows in China, England and France. More information about tickets can be found here.
