Finn Wolfhard turns melancholy and experimental in new single, “Trailers after dark”

Date:

Finn Wolfhard—previously known in the music world as a member of the indie/rock bands The Aubreys and Calpurnia—has released his second solo track, “Trailers after dark,” ahead of his nine-track debut album Happy Birthday out June 6.

Compared to his first release, “Choose the latter,” this single strays from the upbeat instrumentation and vocal combination to deliver a multi-layered story of pleading for love to avoid the unbearable feeling of heartbreak. From the start, a simple, yet emotional chord progression, played by an acoustic guitar, sets the melancholy tone that carries the song to its end—with unifying drum fills, an electric guitar solo and captivating, true vocals adding rich layers along the way.

Alongside the single, Wolfhard released a thought-provoking, dynamically-visual music video, directed by Marcus Mazzula. It encapsulates a consuming, unescapable feeling that somehow finds you even when you’re sleeping. With walls that come alive to depict Wolfhard’s complex, overarching thoughts and dreams, paired with lyrics like “Oh my darlin’ don’t stop loving,”  the video’s way of meshing reality with the subconscious contributes to the deeply personal and vulnerable story of yearning presented in this track.
