Essy releases electro-pop jam, “Moonlight”

Date:

“It’s synth pop baby,” is the sole descriptor under the Spotify artist’s bio for Nashville-based singer-songwriter Essy. On “Moonlight” she delivers on this mantra, releasing a dreamy, dancey, synth-laden track.

“Moonlight” features production from Brandon Paddock, who creates a minimal synth soundscape that explodes into a chorus accompanied by a kick-snare combo. Essy’s voice floats by on this track, never too emotional, never too powerful. This creates a dreamy atmosphere and gives the song a rose-tinted hue that begs you to dance away your troubles.

“Moonlight” is inspired by Swedish synthpop, with Essy citing Robyn as an influence, and this comes through on some level. The new single is more vocal-driven than anything else. With repeated lines like “I’ll be your moonlight… I’ll be your moon / I’ll be the candle… In your room,” the song is easygoing and plays more as a conventional pop track. Highlights include the autotune harmonies of the chorus and the fading and resurgence of quiet synths throughout.

This track will find its audience among those who enjoy pop tunes that are easy to dance and sing along to with repeated lines that you can shout from the rooftops. I felt myself craving a stronger sense of progression and variation, but “Moonlight” is a very polished song with smooth vocals and production that will hit the right note for fans of the genre.
