Inspired by genres like blues, country, pop, and folk, Canadian artist Emma Kade uses her songwriting to reach a variety of listeners. She can bring out the various emotions that are usually attached to these styles, which is why her music is so appreciated and praised. In 2018, for instance, she won the Kootenay Music Award for Best Pop Song for the track “Until My Heart Quits,” which was released with gospel artist Terrance Richmond. She then reached nearly one million streams on “Let Me Go,” a collaborative effort with DJ duo Steam Phunk. In 2024, her single “End Game” found placement on four Spotify editorial playlists, CBC Radio, and SiriusXM. This was a big moment, as “End Game” was Emma’s first country single. As she continues to evolve, Emma gives us “Watering Can,” the first of three new singles that she is releasing with producers Garrett Ward and Dan Botch, otherwise known as The Renaissance.
On “Watering Can,” Emma encourages others to live without comparison, without negativity, and without fear. The lively string riffs, pronounced downbeats, and Emma’s warm country timbre help set the mood, bringing a feel-good vibe to the track. All the while, she sings, “We’re always chasing something on the horizon / Swearing this time we’ll be happy / It’s hard to be a dreamer / When you see the grass is greener in everybody else’s front yard / Well, your grass never grows, what do you expect? / When you pour from an empty watering can.” In the end, we have an uplifting anthem, an Emma anthem, an Emm-anthem if you will.
About the single, Emma shares,
“This song stems from my own experiences navigating through my life and the pursuit of my musical ambitions. In tough times, I often end up writing songs to act as instruction manuals and anthems to work through things and keep going. For ‘Watering Can,’ I wanted to encapsulate the courage it takes to persevere when you feel like you have nothing left.
“Our busy world can bring with it a lot of chaos, uncertainty, and insecurity. It’s easy to dwell on the negatives and instinctively compare yourself on social media to other people’s ‘perfect,’ especially as artists. This song is a reminder to embrace your own individuality, change your perspective, and just do what makes you happy.”
