Nearly a year ago, country artist Dustin Bird released “Get Go,” the first in a trilogy of songs that explore love in its many forms. The track touched on meeting the love of your life with lines like, “I knew it from the get go / I was never ever gonna ever wanna let go” and “Call it luck, call it fate, right time and place / I don’t know what it was, but it don’t gotta be explained.” In June, he released “Cowboy Stay,” which told the story of a wild cowboy who puts down his hat, takes off his boots, and settles down with the person he loves. Both tracks instill the notion that love is powerful, and with “Hating On Love,” Dustin fully embraces this concept and closes out the trilogy.
A declaration of love, “Hating On Love” calls out those who try to prevent others from loving who they please. Over a warm country production, he sings about the adversity and repercussions LGBTQIA+ youth face from unsupportive communities, hoping to make a breakthrough with those who do not understand. In the anthemic choruses, he sings, “I don’t need saving / I can’t change it / Or maybe you’ll never see where I’m coming from” and concludes, “But it’s been long enough / Tell me why we’re still hating on love.” You can check it out below.
About the single, Dustin shares,
“‘Hating On Love’ is my response to hearing the personal stories of some truly amazing people I’ve met. It speaks to the need we still have as a society to be fully inclusive. I don’t have the lived experience of facing rejection, discrimination, or even hate, over who I love. But sadly, that is still not the case for so many of our LGBTQ+ community. I wrote this song to address my generation, our wonderful country music fan base, and me personally, to step up and in unity challenge us all to stop Hating On Love.”
