Toronto based alt-pop singer Devon Cole has just released her latest single “Dickhead”, a sassy track about the perils of being in a bad relationship.
“Dickhead” has a sunny vibe, with its cheerful riff and driving beat that makes us get up and dance from the beginning. Referencing Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”, Cole manages to combine elements of pop and country to create an incredibly catchy breakup song that’s sure to get you singing at the top of your lungs.
Devon does not hold back as she describes how frankly terrible her current partner is: icky, self centered and disrespectful. She also turns the spotlight onto herself, admitting that this is a common occurrence; in that sense, the song becomes immediately relatable. Despite the unnerving story, it’s told in a cheeky way, using everyday situations and funny anecdotes. The music video that accompanies it shows us a painfully unaware man-child, as Devon takes off with her friends; “Dickhead” is fun, campy and cathartic.
