Connor Douglas Ferguson takes a new approach musically with his latest single “Fresh Hell,” produced by Alex Newport. He trades in his usual indie folk compositions for something more rock.
Musically, the song doesn’t immediately come off as grunge as it is. The intro melody of the guitar almost has a bit of country twang rock to it, so the listener may not expect the sudden dive into the heavier grunge melody that kicks in. His low vocals also drive the rawness that many fans of the genre look for. The aggressive guitar melody that picks up also pairs well with his mid-tempo, emotionally packed lyrics.
Lyrically, the song is the epitome of angst. The lyrics add to his emotional, adrenaline-driven tone. The chorus is also the high point of the song that sticks throughout the entirety of the track. The lyrics “ By the throat / Of the flesh / Who needs heaven with hell this fresh” make that impulsive undertone that’s common amongst the grunge rock genre very clear. The catchy, bold lyrics mixed with the heavy, fast-tempo melody are reminiscent of what we’ve heard from similar artist like The Strokes.
The song stands to Connor’s willingness to explore genres and push himself out of the box musically. This stands testament to his level of talent and creativity amongst others within the genre. The new sound might help his music gravitate to a larger audience, as well.
