German-Canadian singer-songwriter bülow has shared a new single titled “Goldmine.” The gripping alt-rock song encapsulates the intricate feelings that follow the end of a toxic relationship.
While bülow’s vocals are delicate and breathy, her delivery is packed with anger and weight. The track’s ever-building instrumentation opens with layered guitars before bringing in distorted drums in the second verse that mirror the singer’s rage-filled vocal performance.
The Juno-winning artist doesn’t hold back on “Goldmine,” as she calls out her ex-partner with cut-through, conversational lyrics that instantly pull you in. She opens the song with gritty details as she sings, “I hope you got bugs crawling under your skin / And dirty laundry sitting out festering / And I hope the microwave stops working right before you put your pathetic dinner in.”
On the inspiration behind the track, bülow says:
“This song is a snapshot into a very particular moment of my processing a breakup. Rage & irony at the center of it all. It was a conflicting feeling knowing I have to break up with someone who I still want in my life. It was my last moment of regret and dwelling before I pulled myself out of that hole.”
After writing songs for artists like Charli XCX, JENNIE and Dominic Fike, bülow now prepares to put out her debut album this fall. “Goldmine” is the follow-up to the recently-released “Counting Candles,” the first taste of new music since becoming a Grammy winner for her songwriting contributions to Beyoncé‘s 2024 album, Cowboy Carter.
