August Royals is building off an earth-shaking debut with his new track “Skintight Crazy” that follows an era of reflection and solace where Royals took some time to redefine himself as an artist. The benefits of his inner-work are palpable on this infectious, coming-of-age, alt-pop banger. “Skintight Crazy” is about a relationship that loses it’s spark because of how people change. Despite this, Royals proves to be a hopeless romantic who keeps hanging on because of the memories he’s unwilling to let go of.
“Skintight Crazy” hits like dopamine with hyper-saturated notes of electric guitar, ear-catching percussion, and a euphoric hook. The single leans into the comfortable chemistry that comes with being in a long-term relationship. The lyrics on the other hand represent Royals’ innermost anxieties that he knows deep down, he’ll one day have to face. “I, I kinda wanna let go / But, you got me on a tightrope baby / Such a pretty lady / With your skintight crazy / Kinda sorta hate me / But you, you don’t want to let go.” The music video for “Skintight Crazy” highlights both the distance and charm that comes with hanging on tight to a fleeting romance.
Revealing more on his track, Royals confides, “This is a song that captures the lingering effects of letting go of a relationship, realizing you’re in love with who they were and not who they are anymore. It’s a song recognizing the highlight reel of love while being aware that’s all it is, a highlight reel. For a hopeless romantic, you’ll always have the what-ifs.”
August Royals is a close contemporary of Kevin Abstract, Ryan Beatty, and Dominic Fike. Entering a new stage of his career with a slew of self-produced singles, Royals is here to remind us that it’s only just the beginning for him.
