Up-and-coming singer Lisa Heller is channeling anthemic pop punk in her newest single, “LOSER!,” the second single to her upcoming debut album.
Despite its insecure theme, Heller hopes to act as a voice for those who feel like they are alone. With millions of streams and views, the singer is achieving just that.
“LOSER!” touches on her alternative pop sound mixed with a pop punk twist, relying on sonic themes reminiscent of angst-filled tracks from the genre of the last decade.
The Connecticut-based songwriter achieves an exciting energy with catchy hooks and high-tempo beats. Post-bridge, the song even leads into a thrilling electric guitar solo. The track relies on heavy pop punk electric guitars similar to Meet Me @ The Altar, while capturing an essence similar to Olivia Rodrigo’s emerging-adult angst.
Heller continues the concept of being a “loser,” stemming from her difficulty with loneliness after someone wronged her. Her anthem begrudgingly welcomes this status with the chorus’ “So sign me up to be a loser all my life.” The sentiment is further reflected on her “anxious-avoidant” temperament, where she fears she “will be single ‘til [she is] dead.”
Her anxiety of being forgotten by someone is also considered in the way she talks about herself, almost disappointed in her attachment to this person. She sings, “when I used to be so cool and calm and lonely all the time,” to continue the way this person has warped her attachment in relationships. Heller is afraid to let go of this person, going as far as saying, “terrified to blink and I lose ya.”
She finally confronts how her grasp on her mental health is worsened by the anxiety of losing this person, singing, “I fell into this tragedy / Ended in insanity / ’Cause you appeared so suddenly,” before accepting, “and now / I’m a fucking loser.”
Lisa Heller’s upbeat and energetic frustration in “LOSER!” is not the end for the singer-songwriter. Heller is set to release a debut album and join Echosmith on their Cool Kids: The Decade Tour this fall!
