American Authors are a platinum-selling band who’s origin story dates back to their time at Berklee College of Music. Since then, the group has surpassed a billion streams, played festivals across the globe, and seen their triple-platinum single “Best Day Of My Life” hit #11 on Billboard’s Hot 100. In their minds, it’s only just the beginning. Their new single “Race Car” is a testament to that. The sonics are vibrant and original as American Authors tell a story of an intense affair that ends up spinning out in the dust.
“Race Car” stuns with bustling chords of acoustic guitar, breathless backup vocals, and heavy percussion that thumps like a beating heart. Lead singer Zac Barnett sings, “Met you by the summer sea / Your aura filled a part of me / I never knew existed / My life became untwisted.” The lyrics behind “Race Car” chronicle a fleeting romance that fades fast under the light of reality.
Revealing more on the track, Barnett confides, “It’s a song about momentary love and falling for someone fast even though you know it’s only going to last a season. It’s that intense feeling of passion you find on a trip or vacation only for it to disintegrate once you get back to reality.”
“Race Car” is a refreshing change of pace for American Authors. The sonics take risks that redefine the sound we’ve come to expect from the band to keep us on our toes and keep us listening.
