With a loyal fanbase and relatable songs, Ally Salort has successfully built a world that she has been crafting since she was a teenager. She started out on YouTube, where she posted viral covers of popular songs. From there, Ally branched out to TikTok, where she started releasing originals. These originals contain themes like love and self-discovery, which are topics that her 1.6M followers relate to and understand. Her new single, “Before and After,” leans into the “love” category, as Ally tries to find her place between romance and no-mance.
On “Before and After,” Ally wonders why she is not totally cut out for relationships. Throughout the indie pop track, she explains that the pursuit and the breakup are thrilling, but the rest of the time is a bust. She sings, “I want love till I finally get it / Call it off, and I always regret it / It’s the in-between where I’m a disaster / I’m so good at before and after.” Her peculiar predicament is almost mirrored in the sound of the verses and choruses, with the verses being more straightforward and menacing (how she feels in the relationship) and the choruses being charming and weightless (how she feels out of the relationship). About the single, Ally explains,
“‘Before and After’ is about liking the feeling of wanting/missing someone more than the feeling of actually being with them. About wanting to love someone from a distance because you think it’ll be easier while also knowing that isn’t necessarily true. I wrote the lyrics of the first half of the chorus in my notes app and then finished the song in a session I had later that day.”
In March, Ally heads out with Mackenzy Mackay for the European leg of his tour. She will join him in Leeds on March 25 before making stops in other places like Manchester, Amsterdam, and Vienna. They will then end the tour in Paris on April 7. Tickets can be found here.
