Mac DeMarco releases new single “Holy” ahead of upcoming album ‘Guitar’

Indie musician Mac DeMarco is back, releasing his second single and video “Holy” from his upcoming album Guitar. Following last month’s song “Home”, which captured a soft and meditative vibe, “Holy” brings a similar yet entrancing energy, asking for a miracle to appear in his life.

In expressing this, Demarco sings, “Miracle, reveal yourself to me / Miracle, your help could set me free.” However, the last few lyrics towards the end of Holy are contradictory: “Curse, carried on forever in me / Curse, from which I may never be free / Curse from down below, holy.” Afterward, the song concludes with a reflective melody, mirroring Mac’s inner thoughts in tune with the ending of the music video.

In comparison, DeMarco filmed the “Home” video himself for the “Holy” music video. Giving context, DeMarco comments:

“I waded around in the ocean fully clothed for a couple hours and filled my boots with seawater. There were some other shots on some rocks I kept trying too, but in the end the clip of me falling in the garden and eating the apple was best. Thank you for listening.”

Guitar was written and recorded in November 2024 at DeMarco’s home in Los Angeles. Except for its mastering process (which was managed by David Ives), DeMarco handled and created all aspects of the record on his own, including shooting the artwork on his tripods and mixing the album in his native country, Canada. DeMarco further explains his process in curating this record.

“I think Guitar is as close to a true representation of where I’m at in my life today as I can manage to put to paper. I’m happy to share this music, and look forward to playing these songs as many places as I’m able.” – Mac DeMarco

DeMarco’s upcoming sold-out tour in North America, the UK and Europe begins later this month with three shows at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. As of next year, Mac will be touring in South America and Asia, with stops in states in the South and Midwest.

To support DeMarco, artists from his record label will be in attendance, including Mock Media, Tex Crick, Daryl Johns and Vicky Farewell.
