Snowstorm or not, Del Water Gap delivers in Boston

Date:

Del Water Gap brought his Chasing the Chimera World Tour to Roadrunner in Boston, MA Tuesday night for a high-energy evening of sing-alongs, dancing, and surprises. From the moment he hit the stage, the crowd was locked in, turning the venue into a non-stop communal release that felt equal parts cathartic and euphoric.

The show happened to to take place just after Boston was hit with a massive snowstorm, but that didn’t stop people from showing up and packing the room wall to wall, smiling and ready to go. Del Water Gap kicked off the night with “Small Town Joan of Arc,” a deep cut from his brand new album Chasing the ChimeraEven with a lesser-known opener, the crowd loudly sang every word, showing me exactly how the rest of the night would unfold.

He went on to perform a run of fan favorites, including “Better Than I Know Myself,” “Doll House,” and “High Tops,” the very first song he released ten years ago. “I promise I don’t say this for every show, but I always have a great time every time I play here in Boston,” he said, which was met with loud applause from the crowd. With the Patriots heading to the Super Bowl, he also threw in a quick “Go Pats!”, kicking the energy up another notch. It was wild to see an artist I’ve always thought as indie completely command a room of 3,000 people on a Tuesday night.

My favorite song of the night, hands down was “Sorry I Am,” a track from his self-titled debut. From the first time I heard it in 2021, I knew it was going to be a lifelong favorite, and hearing it live only confirmed that. You could tell which songs were crowd favorites based on the reaction alone, and “All We Ever Do Is Talk” was clearly one of them, with the entire room singing along without hesitation. Moments like those were a reminder of just how personal his music feels, even in a space that size.

The crowd was in for a surprise toward the end of the night. “Do you guys remember the Now CD’s? This song was on one of them, and it’s still one of my favorites to this day,” he said before bringing out the lead singer of Nine Days to perform their hit, “Absolutely (Story of a Girl).” A wave of nostalgia hit me instantly, since that’s exactly how I first discovered the song too. Once the chorus hit, the entire room screamed every word, turning it into one of the night’s standout moments. To close things out, Del Water Gap ran through his biggest hits, including “Perfurme,’ during which he jumped into the middle of the crowd, and “Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat,” which felt like the perfect way to end the night.

It’s obvious why Del Water Gap shows feel so special. The energy in the room pulls you in, and by the end, you’re left thinking about all the little moments that made the night feel completely alive. You walk out smiling, knowing you just spent a night with music that actually sticks with you.
