After a two year career hiatus to focus on his health, Scotland’s Lewis Capaldi‘s has returned to touring with the start of his sold out headlining UK and Ireland tour. Last night in Sheffield’s Utilita arena, Capaldi performed both recent releases, unreleased songs and well known hits to a crowd of over 13,000.
Though Capaldi officially returned to the stage with a surprise performance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival in England, tonight’s show was the first night back where it was soley about him.
The night started with the recently released “Survive” before alighting the stage with “Grace” from his 2019 album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent. In the set list of 17 songs, the singer-songwriter performed 3 new unreleased songs for audiences, giving a sneak peak into the artist’s upcoming project.
The first surprised audiences with no introduction and while Capaldi has not yet confirmed the songs name, the chorus included the repeated lyrics “Nowhere to run, Nowhere to hide.” The second was love ballad “Something In The Heavens” which the singer released a snippet of a couple of days ago on TikTok. The final unreleased song, “The Day That I Die,” was introduced as “probably the most personal song I’ve ever written” by Capaldi with audiences swaying with the deeply tragic song.

Other song’s performed included “Forget Me, “The Pretender,” “Before You Go,” “Bruises”
and “Forever.” The live version of “Pointless” saw some big changes from its studio version with a longer bridge and more drums. In the shows encore, Capaldi performed some of his most well known songs; “How I’m Feeling Now” and “Hold Me While You Wait” before finishing the night with the smash hit “Someone You Loved.”
The stage was kept simple with a live band accompanying Capaldi and a sheer curtain across the back of the stage. Throughout many of the songs, projections lit up the curtain with graphics and lyrics tailored for each song. Audiences were also given wrist bands that lit up during some songs including the unreleased “Something In The Heavens” and show closer “Someone You Loved.”

Opening for the show was English singer-songwriter Skye Newman who wowed audiences with her powerful voice. The singer-songwriter sang mostly unreleased songs with her only three releases being sung back by the arena.
Having taken some time away from the spotlight, Capaldi took the time to reconnect with attendee’s stating that it’s “generally overwhelming being stood in front of this many people after all that time off.” Before the show, some audiences were treated to some Gregg’s snacks that were being handed out by staff and signed by the singer himself.
The artist also signed some of his tour posters before the show which audiences were able to buy at the merch stand. Other staples of the merch stand included a pink and black tour shirt, white and blue shirt, blue and black water bottles, blue caps, white tote bags, black tour jumpers, key chains and stickers.

Despite the break from performing and releasing music, Lewis Capaldi’s first headlining tour in two years has already sold out with three upcoming nights at the O2 in London. If the first night in Sheffield established anything, it’s to expect new music, intimate moments and heartwarming vocals from the Scottish singer-songwriter as he sets out to take over the world once again.
