Joyner Lucas’s “Not Now I’m Busy” tour made its way to Nashville at the iconic Marathon Music Works on May 25th. Joyner was joined by Massachusetts-based rapper Millyz and rapper/songwriter Dax. The lineup featured artists known for their exceptional lyricism and profound lyrics focusing on internal struggles and mental health, resulting in a night of high-energy performances and introspection.
Millyz opened the show with electrifying energy, accompanied by a DJ who matched his intensity, creating an invigorating stage presence that energized the crowd. He delivered his flows with passion and even performed some acapella freestyles. At one point, Millyz engaged directly with the audience, shaking hands, fist-bumping attendees, and fostering a personal connection with the crowd, setting the stage for the following acts.
Next up was Canada-based Dax, who captivated the audience with his unique blend of hip-hop and country music influences. He began with the poignant song “Dear God,” seamlessly transitioning between powerful flows and softer, heartfelt tracks. His performance featured songs like “Dear Alcohol,” which tackles the struggle with alcoholism, and “To Be a Man,” an anthem for men who feel unheard. For these songs, a Nashville native joined him on stage to perform acoustically. Dax concluded with his hit “Joker,” followed by an acapella rendition of his new single “A Real Man.”
Finally, Joyner Lucas took the stage as the main act, opening with a sitcom-style video fitting the “Not Now, I’m Busy” tour theme. He performed a mix of new songs from the titular album and delivered a heartfelt monologue before his single “Browski,” emphasizing the importance of cutting off toxic people for one’s peace. The song was accompanied by a new video illustrating the duplicitous nature of such individuals. Joyner also included hits from his breakout album ADHD, such as the title track “ADHD” and “ISIS.” In true Nashville fashion, local icon Jelly Roll joined Joyner on stage to perform “Best For Me,” a new single about addiction. Joyner’s set was high-energy yet heartfelt, with transitions featuring sitcom segments during his wardrobe changes, maintaining the show’s intensity.
Joyner Lucas’ ability to convey powerful messages through his music while delivering an electrifying live performance sets him apart as an artist dedicated to his craft. Supported by impressive opening acts, the “Not Now I’m Busy” tour is a masterclass in how a hip-hop show should be delivered.
