Last night’s stop at Montreal’s MTelus for Jessie Murph’s Worldwide Hysteria Tour was an electrifying blend of vintage charm and raw emotion. With her sophomore album Sex Hysteria fresh on the charts reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200, Murph is firmly in a bold new chapter of her artistry.
From the first moment, the stage transported us into another era: a plush pink floor illuminated by soft lights, setting a playful, almost cinematic tone. Draped behind Jessie was a red vintage curtain, evoking the glamor of 1960s-era theaters. The vintage aesthetic think cabaret meets retro-pop was cohesive and stylish, immediately immersing the audience in an intimate yet theatrical mood.
Jessie’s backup dancers, dressed in vintage-style suits, furthered the nostalgia, moving with poised elegance and theatrical flair. Their presence added both visual symmetry and dynamic movement, elevating the stage from merely retro-themed to full-on time-traveling performance.
Amid the retro whirlwind, Murph’s voice remained the emotional anchor raw, expressive, and undeniably unique. At moments, she leaned into the mic with quiet vulnerability; at others, her vocals soared, filling the venue with a force that felt both personal and grand.
Standout tracks that surely captivated the Montreal audience included “Gucci Mane” as a confident, high-energy opener that set the tone immediately. Following was “1965” nodding to the show’s vintage aesthetics. Jessie’s set included a seamless medley blending vulnerability and bravado of “While You’re at It / Drunk in the Bathtub”. The show finished in force with “Blue Strips”, an unapologetic individuality and closing flair.
Jessie Murph’s performance at MTelus wasn’t just a concert, it was storytelling through voice, visual art, and shared emotion. The pink stage, red vintage curtain, and 1960s aesthetic gave the night a dreamlike theatricality. Vintage-suited dancers brought that past-to-present energy alive. And Jessie, through her bold and intimate vocal performance, made it all feel deeply personal. Songs like “Sex Hysteria”, “How Could You” and “Pray” left the room breathless.
