Nell Mescal gets beautifully vulnerable on ‘The Closest We’ll Get’ — EP Review

Nell Mescal has just released her sophomore EP, The Closest We’ll Get, to all streaming platforms today. If one thing should be taken away from it, it’s that she has the potential to be one of the next big acts.

Born in Ireland, Mescal has already had an explosive year. The singer performed at Come Together Fest, Reading & Leeds Festival, and Rock N Roll Circus this summer. This past January, she announced her signing with Atlantic Records, releasing multiple tracks leading up to the EP; one of these was the EP’s title track “The Closest We’ll Get”, a gut-punching internal battle about unspoken love. She expresses emotional uncertainty and what it’s like to experience the fight between settling for less and wanting something more.

After the EP opens with the emotional ballad “Middle Man”, each track flows beautifully from one into the other. Mescal shows off her vocals and lyricism as she leaves her heart unguarded. The folk songs show a vulnerable, more tender side to the singer — one that listeners will end up relating to and finding comfort in. The six-track project serves to open her heart to her fans, bringing them closer than ever before. With this EP, Mescal is making a statement; she is here and ready to take over the scene.

Nell Mescal is set to embark on her The Closest We’ll Get Tour, kicking off in Glasgow on Nov. 9. Tickets are on sale now here.
