Damiano David has torched the rulebook on how to be a solo artist in the 21st century, breaking free from the confines of his band, Måneskin, without ever letting go of it. He’s kept the fire that made him a global name alive and untamed, breathing new life into it with FUNNY little FEARS (DREAMS), the deluxe version of his debut album that first dropped earlier this year.
David’s leap from Måneskin’s frontman to a solo artist has been a master class in evolution. His vibrant debut, FUNNY little FEARS, racked up over 800 million streams, while charting across 20 countries. Not bad for a first try. The LP effortlessly blends bold rockstar theatrics with a more pop-driven sound, winning over new fans left and right.
Kicking off the deluxe, FUNNY little FEARS (DREAMS) opens with a lively collaboration between David, Tyla, and Nile Rodgers on “Talk to Me.” The Italian singer really hit the jackpot scoring a guitar solo from the legendary Rodgers, one of the most influential artists ever, alongside Tyla, who brings a fresh energy that perfectly complements David’s style. Just as his suitcase was half-zipped, ready to go for his world tour, a surge of inspiration hit him square in the face. That’s when “Talk to Me” was born. In a press release, David shares:
“What made this spark even more exciting was knowing that the legendary Nile Rodgers thought the song worthy of adding his solo guitar. I always felt this song should be a duet, and since I’ve recently been listening a lot to ‘Water’. I was completely blown away and really wanted to have her sing it with me.”
Moving on with the groovy rock “Cinnamon,” David teams up with The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr, bridging the gap between his rockstar past and his solo evolution. This one is honestly a bop and will be tough to shake off, oozing the edgy energy David is known for. “The First Time” singer strips it back on the melancholic “Naked.” The echoey vocals help the lyrics explore real emotions behind struggle and growth, reminding us that we often learn the most through dark and difficult times: “I’ve been going through changes / Tried on a million faces / I’ll keep going through changes / Till my heart is finally naked.”
The 26-year-old mixes pleasure with danger on the exhilarating “Mysterious Girl.” David presents an intoxicating image of love with lines like, “She can kill you just by looking in your eyes” and “She’s a devil wearing Prada with an angel’s smile.” It’s the kind of love that screams at you to run for the hills, but is impossible to resist all the same. Rounding out the deluxe is “Over.” David portrays the difficulty that comes with coping with the end of something you once cherished. The line about hearing “our favorite song” on the radio, which once brought joy but now “sounded like hell,” captures how something that was once beautiful can turn painful in an instant.
