Recently, North Carolina natives “The Nude Party” released a new album, an 11 track self-titled record filled with 1960s inspired southern rock n’ roll jams. The six-piece band, who recently relocated to the Catskill Mountains of New York, released their album after they opened for the Arctic Monkeys on a small leg of their most recent tour.

The album starts with “Water on Mars”, a single that was released prior to the album. The song opens with a catchy guitar riff that leads into an organ line that mirrors vocalist Patton Magee’s opening words. If one thing is for sure, this album is going to make you want to dance. In addition to the album’s extreme danceability, there’s also quite a lot of depth in the lyrics to nearly all of the songs on the record, with themes of coming war, the consequence of money, and more.

The fourth track, “Paper Trail”, exemplifies the band’s 60’s influence, with groovy background vocals and a twangy organ sound. The song seemingly references prostitution, with lyrics like “There goes Johnny, he’s only got me till ten / So if you’ve got the money / You can pick me up then”, but the potentially darker meaning is contrasted by the upbeat tempo and Patton’s passionate vocals.

“Astral Man”, a song with a different feeling than the rest of them, takes listeners to a different dimension for 5 minutes and 35 seconds. With a clearly space-influenced, Bowie reminiscent, vibe, the track feels relaxed and otherworldly and is an interesting change from what The Nude Party has previously released.

Overall, the album fantastically illustrates the band’s ability to pull from different eras, genres, and styles. If The Nude Party’s goal was to make an album fun enough to dance to but substantial enough to hold listeners’ interest, then they hit the nail on the head.
