It has been a busy couple of years for indie pop band, Pale Waves, a four-piece group hailing from the UK. Since 2017, the band has been establishing their identity in the music world and building up a fan base. They toured the world, released singles, released music videos, and dropped an EP. After much anticipation, they finally released their debut album, My Mind Makes Noises, a fourteen-track narrative about life, death, and everything in between.
The band’s first single, “There’s A Honey,” is the second track on the album and it takes me back to when I discovered the band. I had pulled up the music video for the song on YouTube and I was really intrigued. In the video, the band is decked out in black clothing, completely contradicting the colorful, pop sound of the song. Soothing purples and blues surrounded the band and highlighted the dreamy aura of the track. The video definitely represented the band’s essence, in that their songs can be both dark and bright at the same time. I was eager for whatever more was to come.
Critics say that Pale Waves have a similar aesthetic and sound to The 1975, creating skepticism as to whether or not they are entirely original. However, Heather’s voice is completely unique and uninhibited, adding so much power and value to the stories we hear on My Mind Makes Noises. She has such a comforting timbre that I almost feel a sense of ease even on the more gloomy tracks like “Karl (I Wonder What It’s Like To Die)” and “When Did I Lose It All.” In addition, the music just has a life of its own, but there’s a certain flare to it that lets you know that you are listening to a classic Pale Waves song.
This album was just what I had been waiting for from Pale Waves. My only small critique is the placement of the two slower songs back to back towards the middle of the album. I would have preferred if they were spaced out a little more, but overall, the band should be very proud of their work. I look forward to their future endeavors!
