There was once a time when Hilary Duff was the blueprint for pop girls everywhere. After a decade long hiatus, she’s finally making her return with her latest LP luck… or something. For those of us who grew up blasting Metamorphosis through our iPod Nano’s and watching her grow from beloved Disney actress into a full fledged pop it-girl, this release feels extra special. Of course, it’s about new music to sing, dance, and cry to — but more than that, it’s about who we were when her voice found us for the first time, and who we’ve become since.
Music may have taken a backseat over the last decade, but Duff has been anything but quiet. In that time, she’s entered a new era of motherhood and shifted her focus back to acting, starring in TV Land’s hit series Younger for seven seasons before landing the role of Sophie on How I Met Your Father. Fast forward to 2026, luck… or something is the sound of a woman who is navigating her thirties in a way that makes you feel like you’ve been put into a trance by the queen herself.
“There’s that question of whether women can have it all, and through this process I learned I had to sacrifice some things in order to put the record first. As hard as that is, I still believe it’s okay to choose yourself sometimes and do what scares the hell out of you. Carving out that time to make an album after all these years was incredibly powerful for me, and now I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
We are all starved for human connection, and Duff is right on the money throughout the album, exploring the complexities of relationships — whether with a romantic partner, family member, or friend — on standout tracks like “Weather For Tennis,” “We Don’t Talk,” and “The Optimist.” “Weather For Tennis” is the latest of the three singles from this albums cycle, tackling the emotional toll of loving more than you are loved. “If you let me finish a sentence then / Then we can bump our heads and drink some wine / Fight over semantics and handpick / Which hill you’re willing to die on / Until the next time / It ain’t the weather for tennis.”
Duff debuted the emotional “We Don’t Talk” at one of her recent live shows, sparking speculation about her estranged relationship with her sister, Haylie. In an interview with Anthony Mason for CBS Mornings, Duff shared her truth, confirming that the track was inspired by their fractured relationship. “It’s definitely about my sister. And, just, absolutely the most lonely part of my existence is not having my sister in my life at the moment. And I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record.”
Anytime an artist executes a sample, I am SAT. Duff had my full attention the second my ears heard the riff from “Damnit” by blink-182 worked into “Growing Up.” As someone with multiple music personalities, even my pop girl and pop-punk selves could not have dreamed up a better crossover. Beyond the nod to one of the most iconic pop-punk bands in existence, the song is actually quite heartfelt, painting a friendship that’s carried you through every season of life. “Handshakes and tattoos / Heartbreaks and bad moods / First kiss and hard truths / Family you can choose.”
Duff wraps up the 11-track LP in a reflective, bittersweet bow with “Adult Size Medium.” Having survived a life in the spotlight, she looks back on her youth and the moments that defined her, leaving us with a mix of nostalgia for what has been and a longing for what’s yet to come: “I’m holding on holed of an adult size medium / I really don’t know how I got here / I’m waking up to a dream sequence / Sometimes I can’t see me in it.”
In support of luck… or something, Duff will be hitting the road for The Lucky Me Tour this summer, marking her first world tour in almost 20 years. Due to overwhelming demand, Duff has added additional dates in London, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York. Get your tickets HERE.
