Sam Varga processes a past relationship on “Long Way Back”

Date:

With his emo-tinged lyrics, expressive vocals, and country-rock sound, Sam Varga delivers music that can span genres just as much as it can accompany different moments in time. He provides a diverse soundtrack that can cater to anyone’s needs, which he proved with his 2024 debut album, Shadow Work. From the witty to the self-deprecating, the stories told within each song are very real, and the music that backs them ranges from sweet to savory. His music just caters to your every need, and if you need to process a past relationship, Sam has you covered.

On “Long Way Back,” Sam compares a past relationship to a train trying to make its way down the track. He gives us open vocals, distressed lyrics, and sunny melodies while he offers this analogy. As Sam sings, “A whistle blow / A warning sign / We missed our stop / I lost my mind / It was jump out or hold on for dear life,” listeners can easily envision this predicament and the stress of the whole situation. In the end, he knows that he stayed on the ride for too long, prompting him to make his “long way back” to the station.

About “Long Way Back,” Sam explains,

“I was with someone special for a long time, but deep down, I always knew it wasn’t right. One day, you wake up miserable, wondering how you got there. I think we’ve all been in something we knew wasn’t for us. The longer you stay, the harder it is to leave, and the longer it takes to find your way back. It’s like missing your exit on the highway and watching it disappear in the rearview, getting further and further away. Eventually, you have to tear yourself away to save yourself.”
