We are in an age where dreamy synth-pop can do wonders. Anyone who listens to The 1975 or LANY will totally understand, as these bands have built escapist worlds with this style. They can make fans cry with a lush, synth-driven melody or dance with a vibrant guitar rhythm. They can also inspire other musicians like Four Nights to make their own songs. For the past four years, Irish indie pop artist Tommy Buckley, also known as Four Nights, has been crafting music that is as emotionally-driven and as colorful as the songs by these groups while also infusing his own artistry. Since his 2021 debut, Four Nights has accumulated nearly 300K streams on Spotify and has been featured on BBC Introducing. He definitely has a unique story to share and an audience that wants to hear it, which brings us to the release of his sophomore EP, in my mind, i’m safe.
On in my mind, i’m safe, Four Nights unravels the feelings of quiet longing and unspoken desire. Listeners have heard these themes on his previous three singles, “safe,” “i just hope you feel it too,” and “DO YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY?” On the first two, Four Nights tries to figure out where he stands. He very much wants this other person, as described in lines like, “If you could see my thoughts, somehow you’d see your face” and “You catch me and I blush / Dreaming of your touch.” Still, he struggles with making a move. Yet, with “DO YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY?,” he can no longer keep quiet—hence the capital letters. Over the bright guitar, he sings, “Just give me something, a little clue / What are you feeling?” and begs, “Just tell me how you feel.”
The new track on the EP is “all night long.” It starts out wistful with its light piano chords, but then it fills out with rhythmic synth beats that give it a disco edge. All the while, Four Nights describes what it is like to want someone he has never met in person. He sings, “Wish there was a way I could talk to you / I’d never let you go and keep you on the phone all night long / Wish there was a way I could be with you / I’d give you all the things you could want and more all night long.”
About the track, Four Nights shares,
“It’s about unrequited love in the digital age—where social media gives you a window into someone’s life, but not a way into their world. I tried to craft a very modern love song about parasocial attachment—falling in love with the idea of someone, or the version of them you create in your head based on their online presence. It’s sad, obsessive, dreamy, and lonely all at once. Almost like the person is stuck between fantasy and reality.”
You can listen to in my mind, i’m safe here.
