Flooding release their first new track in two years, “your silence is my favorite song”

Date:

The Kansas City trio Flooding are an unstoppable force. They do not miss. Since pioneering their signature post-hardcore, grungy, slow-core amalgamation of cathartic noise with their 2021 self-titled album, they’ve been hitting the road both solo and in support of other smashing indie bands. “your silence is my favorite song” is their first release since their 2023 album, Silhouette Machine.

I’ve been following Flooding for a few years now and I’ve been able to catch them live three times in Chicago, each performance outdoing the last. Consisting of Rose Brown on guitar and vocals, Zach Cunningham on drums, and Cole Billings on bass, the three-piece’s crushing performances are truly a unique experience. The band performs with Brown acting as the catalyst, the live wire to explode from slow, methodical riffs into a screaming, clamorous fever pitch.

“your silence is my favorite song” is an expansive, brooding track which focuses on the extremities of Brown’s vocal delivery. In true Flooding fashion, the dichotomy between soft, lush lines and abrasive screams is blurred and layered. It encapsulates the tormenting duality of simultaneous feelings of anxiety, security, fragility.

The track opens with Brown proclaiming, “I hate myself / I’m Jesus Christ / I’m God himself / I wanna die” before entering a mellow, punishing refrain: “If you don’t say then I won’t know / I wanna know what you do when you’re all alone / I’m fragile…”. The strenuously evocative lyrics are backed by punched-out fuzzy guitar and the drum and bass combo which is ready to induce a fury of noise on Brown’s cue.
