The Funeral Portrait tells only truths in “Skinny Lies”

Date:

The emo rock group The Funeral Portrait returns with another single, “Skinny Lies”, detailing the downfall of a relationship and the secrets within it. Jumping straight into hardcore percussion and guitar work, the pre-chorus is whispered, creating a release of tension as the emotional chorus erupts. “What’s left to say / That I haven’t said?” lead singer Lee Jennings asks. Also struggling with identity both in and out of the relationship, the verse goes, “It’s like you never knew me / Or maybe I don’t know myself.”

There is clearly a history between the two, but it is unclear what was real and what was not. Around the 2-minute and twenty-second mark, we hear an intense instrumental break with a falsetto to accent the final chorus. Jennings explains, the single “is about the cracks in a relationship finally breaking open — the little white lies we tell each other stacking up until there’s nowhere left to hide.”

“Skinny Love” is another single off the band’s forthcoming deluxe album Greetings From Suffocate City (Deluxe), slated for release June 13, 2025. The group will be touring and make stops at Vans Warped Tour, Louder Than Life, and Welcome to Rockville, just to name a few. You can hear “Skinny Love” live at those festivals and more, and see them in a city near you. Tickets are available here
