Dutch singer-songwriter la loye releases bittersweet single, “woman”

Date:

la loye is the solo pursuit of Dutch artist Lieke Heusinkveld, putting out alt-folk that is sincerely, quietly devastating. “woman” is la loye’s newest track, a brooding and melancholic tune that continues to extend their output in 2025.

“woman” plays on many strengths of the young musician. A master class in subtle, evocative lyricism, the production at once blends together beautifully and provides a tenuous contrast to the narrative voice. Beginning as a love song and then transforming into something more expansive, la loye creates densely lush imagery on the track like in the lead-up to the refrain, “Told you without warning / I knew you would probably be / Swimming in shades of orange / A beautiful sight to see.”

The song ebbs and flows, swells and deflates in such a natural way. The vocals and the instrumentals are layered to lo-fi perfection. Slightly reminiscent of early Adrianne Lenker, la loye carves out their own space in the genre, blending in reverberating elements of nostalgic dream pop all while keeping a slow, confessional, acoustic tone that ties them to folk. This track encapsulates both sides of the coin — containing darkness within light, nightmare inside dream.
