SYML releases emotional new single, “The White Light of the Morning”

Date:

Multi-platinum artist SYML shared his newest single, “The White Light of the Morning,” on March 21. This is the latest offering from his upcoming album, Nobody Lives Here, due out April 4. SYML is the solo project of Brian Fennell, and this new album will focus heavily on the acceptance of grief and loss, with “The White Light of the Morning” being an appropriate single carrying the same message.

Fennell wrote this song in an attempt to confront the grief he felt after the death of his father. He shares more about the inspiration for the song:

“For months after my dad passed away, I would have these dreams where I am with him in this bright and peaceful place. The saddest part was that, in my dream, he didn’t know he had died. It felt profound and helpless. When we experience loss in any form, our brains try so hard to make sense of it, and this is another attempt.”

The song immediately takes on a melancholy feel, with low choral hums and a simple piano leading us in. SYML’s soft, almost defeated vocals express the sentiments of sadness and regret as the piano calms down and he sings “but I could not save you / as you faded out” in the pre-chorus.

The chorus itself seems to rush in softly, the way a stream rushes through the woods as a soft rain picks up. A haunting harmony joins in as he sings “I will meet you in the white light of the morning” and the soft piano picks up the pace, carrying us forward. SYML’s voice goes up an octave as it gains power, drawing the listener into the intensity of his pain. The release of this chorus calms directly back down into more introspection for the short second verse.

The final chorus comes in the form of even more power, with SYML singing “But I will always love you” as a final declaration before promising again that “I will meet you in the white light of the morning.”

Overall, the track takes on a hymn-like feel as SYML uses choral background melodies to support his expressive vocal delivery. This song will hit listeners in the heart as he draws them into his world of grief and longing.

The song is accompanied by a music video featuring SYML walking alone around a lake, surrounded by forests and mountains, driving home the emotional message.

If you like this song, keep an eye out for his upcoming album, Nobody Lives Here, due out April 4. He’s also currently on tour, so catch him live in a city near you. Tickets are available here.
