Levi Robin is a powerful voice in the rising dark-folk scene. As a songwriter, his lyrics demonstrate palpable depth, often finding the silver linings of our greatest obstacles. As a vocalist, Robin stirs something deep within through his tactful use of low-pitched vibrato. His latest release “Whole As A Broken Heart” is inspired by the spiritual teacher Menachem Mendel of Kotzk and Zohar who has greatly affected Robin’s outlook on life. The song reflects on the lightness that comes after a dark storm, ruminating on the growth that results from a broken heart.
“Whole As A Broken Heart” is filled with effortless chords of acoustic guitar, haunting reverbs, and striking harmonies that cut through the surface and speak straight to the soul. Robin sings, “Come as you are / Whole as a broken heart / What’s done is done / Keep on keeping on.” This cathartic reverie seeks to heal the wounds not only in Robin’s heart, but in the hearts of his listeners.
Revealing more on his track, Robin confides, “There’s nothing so whole as a broken heart’ and ‘there is no light like that which comes from great darkness’. In my life, I’ve seen that when I allow myself to take on the bitter and broken, letting the walls of my heart break in humble surrender, then the bitter turns to sweet, and the brokenness turns into fertile soil, in which ‘those who sow in tears will reap in joy’. Consider this an invitation, to come as you are, whole as a broken heart.”
“Whole As A Broken Heart” marks the first release of an exciting collaboration between Levi Robin and producer Yoel Kreisler, aka ‘FRAYMES’. Robin has previously opened for Matisyahu. Demonstrating grit, poignancy, and lightness in spite of it all, “Whole As A Broken Heart” is a testament to Robin’s true nature as an artist.
