Starting out on YouTube, We Are All Fossils was considered a side project for South African indie-folk artist Deist Oelofse. Yet, his music started to take on a life of their own, its blend of folk and ambient elements serving as a place where listeners can meditate and reflect. These songs not only encouraged listeners to become more in-tune with themselves and their surroundings but also reminded Oelofse of the resilient spirit of life itself. As his music blossomed, it was apparent that We Are Fossils was no longer a side project. Oelofse began making music full-time and released two studio albums, 2018’s The Optimist and 2019’s Songs For Strangers. These albums flaunted his expansive sound, while newer singles like “Hollow” and “Cecilia” refined it. Coming off a milestone performance at BBC’s Maida Vale Studios, We Are All Fossils is set to have a dynamic year ahead – and what better way to start 2025 than with the release of a new single, “Rapture.”
Gentle and curious, “Rapture” is a thoughtful exploration of adaptation and change. Its acoustic-driven sound and lush indie production provide a safe space to contemplate one’s thoughts and feelings, as We Are All Fossils does in the lyrics. With calm and steady vocals, he asks, “Do I give up now and give in? / Do I give up now if I stand there in the sunlight?” The unwavering spirit of the music cushions the weight of these questions, bringing a hopeful tone to the track.
About the track, We Are All Fossils explains,
“‘Rapture’ captures the journey of breaking free from numbness and embracing change. Inspired by mornings in the Lake District, the song reflects on nature’s resilience – how it adapts to shifting conditions, no matter how harsh. This sparked a personal reckoning with my own resistance to change and the impact it’s had over time.”
