Japanese Breakfast announce new album and 2025 tour dates

Date:

Indie pop band Japanese Breakfast has announced their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), due out March 21, through Dead Oceans. Produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills — renowned for his work with Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple — the album marks the band’s first proper studio release and was recorded at the iconic Sound City in Los Angeles. Departing from the bright extroversion of Jubilee, frontwoman and songwriter Michelle Zauner dives into the moody depths of melancholy, a fertile space often associated with poetic inspiration.

For Melancholy Brunettes reflects Zauner’s life following the release of Jubilee and her bestselling memoir Crying In H Mart, both of which catapulted her and the band to mainstream stardom. Jubilee featured hit singles like “Paprika,” “Kokomo, IN” and “Be Sweet,” the latter featured on Amazon Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty.

“I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” Zauner said in a press release. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.”

The album’s lead single, “Orlando in Love,” debuts today (Jan. 7, 2025). Inspired by John Cheever’s take on Orlando Innamorato, an unfinished Renaissance epic by Matteo Maria Boiardo, the track is a layered reflection on love and longing.
