A beautiful acoustic night with Katie Gavin in Boston

Date:

If you’re familiar with the band MUNA then you are definitely familiar with Katie Gavin (their lead singer). This time Katie embarked on a solo endeavor of her own with her debut album What a Relief, a fantastic work of art. In support of her new album, Katie has been on her own tour across the U.S and made a stop in Boston for a very intimate show at a super sold out Brighton Music Hall.

I’ve been to this venue countless times but this was the most packed I have ever seen it, that’s Katie’s impact for you. Dedicated fans waited outside for hours in the cold just to get a close enough spot to the stage. Everyone in there was so excited to hear these songs live for the first time and they were definitely in for such a treat.

The night got off to a fantastic start with an opening set from Nana Adjoa – an Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter who got the crowd into it early on. Katie would actually come out and join Nana for a song to the crowds surprise. It was a beautiful moment.

The time was 9pm and it was time for Katie to grace the stage. She would be joined by Nana for her whole set, while she played backing guitar for Katie. Before Katie opened up with “Today” she came out with strawberry mugs in hand and poured hot tea into them while dancing to a Christmas themed song – Christmas Eve/Sarajevo by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, truly getting into the holiday spirit.

Katie played the entirety of What a Relief, and also threw in an unreleased song called “She Gives Me Feelings”. The vibe of the night was super intimate, while between songs Katie would chat with the crowd and ask how they were while some would shout out random questions for her. It felt almost like a mini podcast in a way. Katie would share the meanings behind the songs and while the album is rather somber at times no song is as heart wrenching as “Sweet Abby Girl”, about the passing of Katie’s dog Abby. Tears were definitely shed on that one.

This was such a special night and tour, between the cozy imitate vibes, the stage banter between Katie and fans, and the beautiful heart wrenching music. Katie does a fantastic job at bringing people together and creating such a welcoming environment. If you were lucky enough to be there it will certainly be a night to remember forever.
