On the up and up is a London-based group called Terra Twin, whose new single “Crooked” sends an indie-rock message that’s pretty straightforward. As if I listened to it on a portable CD player, over-ear headphones and all, the new single has an artful angst that builds as it plays.
The song begins with a fuzzy guitar riff and a snare, with bits of ambient sounds and eavesdropping on conversation. The riff continues as the first verse says for the first of two times “Your karma will get you on fire.” The song alludes to a few variations of sparks and fire, something intangible and angry. More instruments add to the chorus with a slight comedown to the second verse. The chorus emphasizes that things are not ideal, an observation detailed more in the bridge: “I’m not going round again / I’ve seen it all for now.” High energy and high-pitched guitar comes in to close the song with life before ending pretty abruptly, a purposeful and punchy way to conclude.
Frontman Maxim Baldry says, “‘Crooked’ is about smiling when the luminous, crumbling world around you starts shaking. It’s about keeping your eyelids up and finding stillness.” The band’s upcoming EP Static Separation is set to release on February 6, 2025, having been produced by James Dring. Publications such as Dork, DIY and BBC Music 6 have praised Terra Twin for their unique sound and what the group is bringing to the London and international indie music scene.
