Indie pop artist brooke is establishing her sound in her newest love song, “desirée.” This new track marks the final single of her upcoming debut EP, Away Today, releasing in the new year. Despite taking a break from music to find herself, brooke has come back full-swing, releasing previous singles, “Alarming,” “All I Ever Wanted,” and “you watch me break,” earlier this year.
Boston-born, Brooklyn-based brooke cuts deep into the essence of what it means to be indie. At just 21 years old, her singles are self-produced, composed, written and arranged. If not for her incredible feats as a young creative, her reflection on the idea of being a young queer person learning about love and desire through the unique lens of New York City is progressively poignant. brooke describes the single as the following:
“desirée is about infatuation and desire. It’s about knowing someone is unattainable but wanting them anyway. It’s about being young and making bad decisions; getting close to what you want and then fucking up. It’s about youth and lust and everything that is being queer and 21 in New York City. I hope you enjoy.”
brooke’s sound emulates many different indie pop and indie alternative sounds, reminiscent of a mix between Dominic Fike, Faye Webster, and Kevin Abstract. Her minimalist guitar riffs paired with hollowed out pop punk drums and funky baselines build a foundation for her casual, laid-back vocals and harmonies to stand out. With catchy hooks, this song leaves listeners begging for more as it tapers off following a bridge instead of wrapping up neatly. Despite this, brooke maintains the DIY feel of modern indie.
“desirée” is a track about longing for someone. In the modern dating scene of situationships and indefinite commitment, brooke states, “I don’t know what this means either / But enough of old timelines.” The singer inevitably knows the path these relationships tend to follow and only hopes to hold onto this person for longer: “Desirée how you tempt me / Can’t bear to watch this end.”
Inevitably, brooke is tethered to this person, singing, “Just something about your love / Keeps me up.” Much to her dismay, brooke cannot help but “run back to [her],” saying, “that’s just what I do.”
Through groovy indie pop, brooke’s new single, “desirée,” is a key insight into modern romance.
