California-based indie rock band Rainbow City Park has returned with their newest single “Overgrown.” This new single includes all of the indie folk staples, from dreamy guitar riffs to introspective lyrics. However, they blend their own sound with influences of the 90s alt rock scene. The band is made up of guitarist Chris O’Keefe, drummer Ryan Williams, lead vocalist/guitarist Dani Judith, and guitarist/vocalist Nick Nassab. The band collectively manages to strip back and garner a raw sense of longing in this track.
This was altogether a new sound for Rainbow City Park. The soft whisper-like vocals lead you into the song accompanied by the simple acoustic guitar melody. For half the song, it’s purely vocals and acoustic slowly building into the electric guitar and drums, accompanied by the higher range of notes being sang to really emphasize the chorus.
The lyrics in this track take center stage, illuminated by the softer melody. The lyrics are raw in their approach to describe the melancholic feeling of nostalgia. The lyrics paint a clear picture for the audience of that transition period from adolescence to the apprehension within adulthood. The lyrics “And I know this was once considered my teenage dream / But I feel overgrown / this is no longer my home” clearly set that angle of transition for the audience.
Overall, the lyrics explore the complexity of growing up and navigating the emotions attached to it. The song is able to sonically and vocally convey that tension between looking into your youth and being able to accept the time that has passed. It’s a song that encompasses the inevitable growth humans go through in life and that’s bound to resonate with listeners.
