Existentialism and mysticism in Gabrielle Ornate’s “Haunted Earth”

Date:

Fresh new talent emerges in Gabrielle Ornate and her powerful rock single, “Haunted Earth.” The song’s modern mythology ponders one’s role in the world, delivered through symphonic arrangements and dramatic rock.

Co-produced and co-written, Ornate has released theatrically whimsical rock tracks over the last few years, amassing over 600,000 streams across singles. Along with her exceptional singles such as “The March of the Caterpillars” and “Phantasm” in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Ornate is back in full swing this year. “Haunted Earth” continues to build on her mystic and creative sound following previous singles, “Enchantress of Sound” and “Nine Lives” released in 2024.

Emulating powerful women-led alternative rock and pop punk bands like Wolf Alice, Paramore and Evanescence, Ornate delivers strong vocals over deep metal guitars and heavy drum beats. Despite its edge, the track keeps in tune with the pop structure.  Opening on an orchestral arrangement before seamlessly transitioning into heavy guitars, the singer is bringing the drama in this cinematic track.

At first glance, this song draws on the existentialist ideas of “destiny” and “incarnation.” Ornate crafts lyrics that meditate on the idea of a “burning for resurrection,” as she describes a “rising corpse” following “degradation.”

However, Ornate uses this “haunted earth” to reflect on the long-debated free will versus determinism ideology. Evidently, she aims to question reality and one’s agency in changing the world: “What will be, will be / We all get what we deserve.”

Ultimately, Gabrielle Ornate’s powerful world-building reflects her compelling creativity both in sound and in thought.

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
