Yearning for intimacy in The Sound of Modesty’s “safe in your arms”

Date:

Often known for their metal-heavy tracks, emerging alt-rock act The Sound of Modesty offers security in “safe in your arms.”

Singer-songwriter Yvonne Han created The Sound of Modesty to deliver rich fusions of alternative rock and Japanese rock. Alongside producer and guitarist Rayn and Devon Rampere, Oscar Brewer and Ned Forster, a band emerged, cultivating technical ingenuity in their craft. With Han’s experience studying music production at Leeds Conservative, the group offers up timid melodies in their newest track.

Han’s delicate vocal carries the first third of the song alongside enchanting siren-song backing harmonies. A trembling voice conveys the gravity of the emotions depicted in this track alongside spiraling toned keys. The singer grapples with cloaked feelings, tiptoeing around telling her loved one she misses them. The song treads around the inability to express one’s difficulty maintaining spatial distance in a long-distance relationship. Han sings, “I wanna crawl into your arms / Press my ear against your heartbeat,” before repeatedly reaching out with “if I could stay with you.”

The second third weaves a contemporary dance with demanding drum beats and fuzzy electric notes as Han situates her introspection with, “we’re hundreds of miles apart,” after centering her desire for immediate gratification with, “I need to be with you tonight.” She misses them badly. Following her next “if I could stay with you,” Han drops the needle on, “I would hold you close / Until everything will be alright.”

Metal guitars bellowing, her emotions are drawn out through sound. An intense guitar solo encases the crescendo, while layered harmonies and vocalizations are rhythmically sprawled across the sonic landscape, emulating not just the chaos of the genre, but also the chaos in her mind.

With crippling urges for physical and emotional intimacy, The Sound of Modesty’s “safe in your arms” weighs the sacrifices of long-distance relationships and the inability to experience security with one’s loved one. This new single is the first to come in anticipation of their upcoming sophomore album.

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
