Julia Adrian‘s newest single “Sucked In” is a dream/alt pop staple. It blends genres beautifully, solidifying her range and artistic ability but also integrating her individuality into her music. This song in particular, while a familiar sound, is one that has not been heard in the genre generally for years.
The song opens with an old-fashioned infomercial sound only to be overtaken by a lo-fi slower lax tempo, something that’s truly unique. Her voice is also quite unique; her tone is reminiscent of early 2000s alt singers but the musical composition of the song almost has a jazz vibe to it.
The melody is comforting in its tone — it’s low with a groovy percussion and beautiful ad libs. It’s reminiscent of early 50s dream pop. The synth of the guitar also adds an extra layer of texture to the song. This combination helps create an inviting atmosphere for the listener. Adrian’s tone is also very unique; it’s seductive, relaxing, and comforting all in one. Her tonal quality is incredibly rich and truly captivating.
Lyrically, she’s exploring themes of falling into someone you already know you shouldn’t be, imitating the feeling of getting drawn in. Some of the lyrics that really speak to this are “is it self-sabotage / is it self conscious try to take space but I can’t win with gravity / how did this happen, black hole brought me to my knees.” The lyrical composition in combination with the melody elevates the track all together.
