Most recently, Canadian country artist Annika Catharina released her third single of 2024, “Love and Hate.” Before this, she had released “What if I” and “Bandit,” both of which established Annika as a fiery act to watch this year. Released in January, “What if I” reached #2 on the SiriusXM Top of the Country Radio in Canada, made it to the finals of the ‘Unsigned Only’ Music Competition, found a place on Apple Music’s ‘Canada’s Country’ editorial playlist, and passed 150K streams on Spotify. Annika’s follow-up single “Bandit,” released in May, was just as popular. It reached #1 on SiriusXM’s Top of the Country Radio not only once but twice, earned over 90K streams on Spotify, and was placed on various Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists. With “Love and Hate,” Annika continues to have an impressive year, as it has already received 150K Spotify streams, made its way onto prominent Apple Music and Spotify playlists, and positioned Annika as the cover artist of Amazon Music’s ‘Poppin Country’ playlist.
The track itself was written by Annika, Parker Graye, and the duo known as The Renaissance, which consists of Dan Botch and Garrett Ward. Filled with melancholy guitar riffs, quick and steady beats, and Annika’s fervent country vocals, “Love and Hate” captures the fire and ice found within a tumultuous relationship. When describing the track, Annika revealed,
“Timing is everything. Sometimes two people are perfect on paper, but they’re together at the wrong time. Before long, they’re trapped in what feels like an endless cycle of passionate love, rising anger, and crushing anguish. After being in such a relationship, I know the highs and lows too well. All these years later, it felt like the right time to revisit and reflect on that experience and craft a song to capture all of those emotions. ‘Love and Hate’ emerged.”
Directed by Max Chadwick, the music video below finds Annika at the center of this storm. Viewers will see her on a physical and emotional journey of sorts as she is found riding in the passenger seat of a truck, headed to an unknown destination. In between these scenes, Annika is performing the track with her guitar in hand, bringing a live element to the song. Towards the end of the video, she is seen in the driver’s seat of this truck, implying that she is now in control of her story.
You can listen to “Love and Hate” on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and SoundCloud.
