Drew Schueler is thanking his ex in “Happy That I Met You”

Date:

Rising multi-hyphenate Drew Schueler is thankful for a breakup in new single, “Happy That I Met You.” The track was the third to be released in anticipation of his upcoming project.

Schueler’s dynamic artistry is on display in this new single. The singer co-produced “Happy That I Met You” with Ben Foster, and the two deliver crisp attention to detail. The song opens on faint sampling, before crisp vocals and tender piano melodies and a steady beat drive a rush. The track captures a running pace of a heartbeat in its percussion.

The Nashville-based singer is setting himself up for an incredible year following winning the grand prize for the NSAI Song Contest, before releasing three exciting new singles that have already amassed hundreds of thousands of streams.

The songwriter describes “Happy That I Met You”:

“Just because it wasn’t meant to be forever, doesn’t mean that it was not meant to be. Sometimes you have to let someone go to make room for yourself to grow.”

The single is a reflection on a past relationship. Schueler sings, “I’m happy that I met you / But I’m happier that I let you go” as he says goodbye to a past partner. He relishes in his past experiences, thanking them for shaping the person he is coming out of it: “Guess I should thank you / Because in your absence / I found my way.”

Schueler points out his revelations, only coming to terms with his emotions once the relationship has passed. He sings, “I’m finally vulnerable for once / I see it all in hindsight.” He continues this thought as he looks for the good in the bad: “Ruin me so I could make some room for all these better things.”

With raw, emotionally-driven vocals similar to that of Lewis Capaldi or Ed Sheeran, and a music style similar to Dermot Kennedy, Drew Schueler captures freedom through sound in “Happy That I Met You.”

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
