Clover County delivers upbeat melancholia in “Ultraviolet”

Date:

Your new favourite indie pop song was released on October 9th: Clover County is back with her dazzling new single, “Ultraviolet.” This new track marks the third single of Clover’s upcoming EP, Porch Light, releasing on November 15th.

In this perfect indie-pop track, Clover captures a sunny afternoon in groovy guitar-driven rhythms and light, up-tempo drum beats. With twinkling percussion and smooth synths peeking out of a blend of acoustic and electric guitar, “Ultraviolet” carries an enchanting atmosphere, reminiscent of work by artists like Wet Leg or Del Water Gap. Produced by Nick Lobel, Clover delivers crisp and soft vocals similar to that of girl in red.

Growing up in Central Florida, Clover County was drawn to her father’s catalogue of ‘80s music and the prominent female musicians who paved the way for her to learn. From learning how to write songs at thirteen, Clover is expressing a longing and deep desire for connection in this track, completely contrasting its sound. The singer delivers lusciously imaginative poetry with lines from “I’ll drip dry on the clothes line” to “Asleep in bed / You’re still sweetly glowing.”

This track, beautifully written by AG Schiano, Cece Coakley and Nick Lobel, tiptoes around a frustration of feeling intense emotions veiled by deafening silence. The narrator experiences the world in “ultraviolet,” a bright wave of light invisible to the naked eye, but visible once paired with the right black light. Her passions are strong, but they cannot reach the proper conversation, despite a desire to reach one.

This slow-burning tension is brought out by the quietness “creeping in slowly,” and is reinforced by the silence of the night. It seems her partner is not reciprocating her passion, and that their everyday life suffers for it, with the image of “earthly desire caught this house on fire.” Despite their closeness, and the enumerated indicators of domesticity, she feels entirely distant. She tries not to prod, but will “try to lure [them] out into the night.” And yet, she still fondly tends to them: “Warm bath in your baby blues / I’d hold my breath, I’d drown in you.”

Clover County’s deceivingly upbeat track “Ultraviolet” is a perfect blend of bright pop with underlying melancholic tones. Clover County is not shying away from delivering fun rhythms with meditative lyrics, continuing into her new EP, Porch Light, which is releasing on November 15th. Also, be sure to check her out on tour with Morgan Wade this fall!

Somewhere at the intersection between my love for music and my love for writing lies my passion for music journalism. While the title still seems silly, the ability to capture an artist's creation and share it with the world will never cease to excite me. As a psychology student, I continue to be fascinated with the underlying mechanisms of the human condition. What better way to understand the human mind if not through a person's art?
