Lady Charles latest release, “Oh Boy!”, is a daring soundtrack that takes musical theater to new heights.
Known for their theatrical flair and fearless approach to music, Lady Charles delivers a collection that complements the play’s narrative while also standing tall on its own.
The title track, “Oh Boy,” opens with a burst of teenage rebellion and self-discovery, blending retro disco, funk, and electro-pop to mirror the highs and lows of adolescence.
The whole album carries a dynamic energy, with tracks like “Child of the Night” capturing a relentless 70’s groove that demands your attention. “Cherry Chapstick” and “Hands” keep that energy flowing, layering funk rhythms and theatrical flair, pulling the listener deeper into the story.
“Child of the Night” is a standout on the album. Shifting from progressive rock-inspired riffs to sweeping synthscapes, eventually exploding into a powerful, anthemic chorus all while maintaining a lively undercurrent of disco grooves.
Influenced by icons like David Bowie, Chic, Kate Bush, and modern artists such as MGMT, U2, and Late of the Pier, the song feels like a condensed rock epic.
While the “Oh Boy!” play explores themes of identity, societal pressure and coming of age, the music amplifies these experiences. The result is an album that’s as much about storytelling as it is about hitting you with infectious beats and emotional resonance.
Lady Charles has evolved from fronting glam-rock outfit Valois to their now current role as a genre-defying solo artist.
Charles shares:
“”Oh Boy!” is a very special record for me, because I have always wanted to make music for theatre and cinema. I love the synergy of different art forms, and the challenge of being creative while working in service of a narrative. It’s the first soundtrack I composed, and it gave me the opportunity to explore disco both for pop song structure and instrumental score.
The play is a twisted, funny, bizarre adaptation of Hamlet and for it the director wanted Saturday Night Fever style disco dance numbers. I tried to situate all the sounds in the 1970’s while bringing in elements of modern indie rock and electronic music in a way that enhanced the impact of the show. For songs with younger characters I brought in more modern sounds, such as Child of the Night which is almost like an epic U2 or Killers song with some disco mixed in.”
“Oh Boy!” feels like a culmination of their journey, a bold statement of identity and creativity. It’s the sound of an artist who knows exactly what they’re doing – merging styles and creating something unmistakably their own.
