instant crush has something for everyone with “SAFETY NET”

Date:

instant crush is riding the new wave of alternative music, gifting the genre with their new single “SAFETY NET.” The band is made up of Megan Cannon, Mathew Tran, Keegan Mangahas, and Zoee Mangahas. This is a single off their upcoming album I’M SORRY I DIDN’T BITE MY TONGUE out October 25th. This song marries the pop and alternative music genres to create a track that so many music lovers can appreciate. The mix of grungy drum beats and bright electric guitar riffs creates a tasteful contrast from the lyrics.

The song immediately opens with a mid- to fast-tempo bright drum melody accompanied by a quick electric guitar beat. There’s a layer of synth in the instrumentals that just adds to the complexity of the song as a whole. The hints of post-modern pop scattered throughout the song are reminiscent of 2000s classics within the alternative genre. They did not turn to switch the old out with the new but instead took inspiration from notable names like The Killers and Paramore. Vocally, Cannon’s tonal quality is something truly special. Her vocals are controlled and precise. She doesn’t take them over the top – they are intentional, emphasizing and enunciating where needed to highlight the themes of lyrics. There’s a whine in her voice that adds angst to the overall sound on the track similar to artists like The Marias.

Lyrically, the song is dynamic yet relatable. They express this feeling of confusion trying to navigate feelings post-relationship and seeing more clearly how the comfort of that relationship was not breeding any positive growth. The lyrics are catchy and simple in combination with the melody. The chorus particularly sticks out, saying “I was caught up in your safety net / I was runnin’ couldn’t catch my breath / fallin’ over til I hit my head / on the words you said / Yeah what you give is what you get.” There was a build into this section of the lyrics, driving emphasis to the understanding that there was a form of an illusion that they eventually broke free from after the relationship.

Overall, the song is crafted to attract a large audience due to its blend of genres. The production of the song is layered in such a way that complements the lyricism. The lyrics are relatable and fun to sing along to and stand as a testament of what’s to come from their new album.
