On Sept. 13, UK singer Conor Maynard and rapper ANTH came together again to create heartbreaking song “Day of the Dead.” The song is inspired by ANTH’s unfortunate breakup story in which his long-term ex didn’t wait for even a day to find someone new.
Conor Maynard opens up the song with “Last time I saw you / You had that hickey on your neck / Who put that on you?” to begin telling listeners the betrayal ANTH felt by his ex. Maynard’s voice and a guitar work together to create a soft melody that is accompanied by a reggaeton beat. In the chorus, the bass goes up to let the reggaeton components of the song take over as Maynard sings about why the relationship is dead to him.
ANTH raps a quick, short verse to channel his frustration. It’s clear he’s unhappy about how he dealt with so much during the relationship for nothing when he raps, “How many times must I deal with the drama / ‘Cuz that brings trauma.” With most of the lines rhyming, he is able to rap smoothly despite his breakup being rough.
ANTH’s breakup story is insane and will make listeners understand the lyrics more after hearing how his ex hurt him. He shares with fans:
“The day after me and my ex of 3 years broke up, I went to her apartment to try and resolve things … she was trying to cover up the fact that her neck was covered in hickeys. I was in complete shock and it absolutely destroyed me. It hadn’t even been 24 hours that we had broken up. Deep down, to this day, I always felt that was the final defining moment that our relationship truly died and that is literally how I ended up writing this song.”
In the music video, they make exaggerated, hurt facial expressions to convey how hurt ANTH is by his ex’s actions. The two artists have collaborated various times before on songs like “Hawk Tuah” and “Won’t Feel the Same.” The song’s cover art is beautiful as it has a drawing of two skulls inside a heart that is being punctured by a dagger.
