Drew Tarves, better known as indie pop standout young friend, returned to the music scene with the release of his newest single, “boyfriend material,” on Aug. 30. Drawing influence from across the board and not only in the realm of music, Tarves cites Frank Ocean, young Leonardo DiCaprio, and small hats amongst other trends that impact his style.
“boyfriend material” is a bluesy slacker-rock tune that features Tarves grappling with his own vulnerability. About his role in the song, Tarves said:
“I play this character that is meant to be sleazy, and I confront the fact that I am not in fact boyfriend material, I’m really just a sort of fling before the real thing comes along.”
Tarves recently completed a run of shows on the west coast across California and Washington. Now, he is prepping for the release of his first full-length album. Tarves said:
“This album takes notes from a lot of different artists and bands that I really love, and as a result, it is this sort of genre-bending fever dream album.”
